El Greco

"El Greco," whose real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos and who lived from 1 October 1541 to 7 April 1614, was a Greek artist who lived and worked in Spain during the Middle Ages and is known for his paintings, architecture, and sculpture. Greco was descended from a wealthy family of merchants and was born and raised in the ancient Greek city of Candia. He attended a post-Byzantine art school for his early education and then moved to Venice at age 26 to further his artistic career. He established himself in Rome, where he opened a workshop, in 1570. In the years leading up to his death, he relocated to Toledo, Spain. While living in Spain, he produced many of his most well-known works and gained widespread recognition after being commissioned to create works of art for numerous hospitals and churches. Expressionist and theatrical touches could be found in some of his pieces. Because of this, he earned the ire of some of his contemporaries. His contributions to the field were greatly lauded in the twentieth century. He was renowned as a one-of-a-kind creative whose work wasn't influenced by any one school of art. His death occurred in Toledo, Spain, when he was 70 years old.
