This oil sketch was created on Hahnemühle Museumkarton, hand-primed for oil painting. In the glazing layers, ultramarine violet and manganese brown dominate. This manganese ore comes from Norway, which I ground in my studio, transforming the raw mineral into pigment to paint this sketch.
Some paintings can be described, others are best left on their own. This one falls somewhere in between – it leaves space for silence. I will definitely develop it into a larger painting. I'm considering a tighter crop to give the form even more independence.

I grind paints for my artworks using historical recipes from masters like Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Vermeer. I source pigments from rare locations—ranging from geological expeditions to specialty shops. I thicken linseed oil under the sun according to a 14th-century recipe, which adds depth and durability to my paintings. Despite available technologies, I choose traditional methods to create pieces inspired by the heritage of past masters.
