Alfred Freddy Krupa was born in 1971 and lives and works in Croatia. His artistic career really took off in 1995 when he obtained his Master of Painting degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb, a prestigious institution founded in 1907 as Kraljevsko zemaljsko više obrazovalište za umjetnost i umjetni obrt. This academy is renowned for its excellence and its role in training renowned artists. During his studies, Krupa had the privilege of being mentored by respected professors such as Dr. Matko Peić and Nikola Koydl MFA, a renowned artist who has exhibited at the prestigious Venice Biennale. The influence of these mentors played a crucial role in the development of his artistic career.
Passionate about art history, Krupa pursued non-degree postdoctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Tonko Maroević at the University of Zagreb in 1997 and 1998. He also had the opportunity to continue his research in Japan from 1998 to 1999 thanks to the Monbukagakusho Scholarship (文部科学省奨学金, Monbukagakushō Shōgakukin), under the direction of Prof. Akira Itoh at Tokyo Gakugei University (東京学芸大学).
His outstanding work in drawing allowed him to join the Royal College of Art's Post Experience Programme on 16 February 2001. Although he was unable to attend the programme due to financial constraints, Krupa continued his studies at the University of Zagreb, where he was officially recognised as a 'Professor of Drawing and Painting' by the Croatian Institute of Education, now known as the Agency for Education and Teacher Training (ETTA/AZOO), in 2005.
Since its inception, Krupa’s work has received significant public and professional recognition, culminating in a celebration of his 30-year career in 2020. He first came to prominence in 1990 through an article in the popular Yugoslav weekly “Vikend/Weekend.” That same year, he held his first solo exhibition and has since exhibited regularly in various countries, including Europe, Central and East Asia, Australia, and North and Central America. His works have been presented alongside other major figures in the art world such as Edo Murtić, Miroslav Šutej, Ivan Kožarić, and many others.
Krupa uses a variety of mediums such as ink on paper, watercolor, oil on canvas, ink on board, collage on paper, and digital art, exploring styles ranging from abstract and geometric abstraction to dada, collage, and surrealism. His work is a reflection of his commitment to merging creativity and technique to create unique and captivating works.
