Hugh Kerr is a contemporary artist based in Hobart, Australia. Originally from the UK, Kerr moved to Hobart in 2010 after extensive travels across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. His professional background includes work as a geologist and environmental scientist, which deeply informs his artistic practice.
Kerr's art primarily involves oil painting and pen and ink drawing. His work is characterized by a cerebral, politically aware, and surreal style. Largely self-taught, Kerr has developed a unique style through years of experimentation. His artwork explores themes such as science and technology, nature and the environment, working life, politics, and the mechanics of human society.
Since 2014, Kerr has held several solo exhibitions in Tasmania and participated in group shows throughout Australia and the UK. His talent and distinctive voice have been recognized in various art competitions; he has been shortlisted for several prestigious awards, including the 2024 North Sydney Art Prize, the 2023 Henry Jones Art Prize, and the 2019 45 Downstairs Emerging Art Prize.
