He was born in a small town in the Zapotec Sierra Norte, Teococuilco de Marcos Pérez, in 1964. At only nine years old he migrated with his family to the city of Oaxaca in search of better opportunities for his education, and there he trained in plastic arts.
He studies at the School of Fine Arts of the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca and the Rufino Tamayo Workshop, where he will deepen his training in graphic arts and its potential. In 1963 he moved to Mexico to continue his studies at the National School of Plastic Arts.
He held his first individual exhibition in 1985 at the Sol y Luna gallery, with the success that came with the acquisition of three of his works by the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1989 he received a scholarship for an exchange program that allowed him to travel to the United States, an opportunity that he took advantage of to travel and establish contacts in the large cities of North America.
Alejandro Santiago's works investigate the connection between the physical aspect of consciousness, with that which unites us as human beings; exploring the ethical condition of art and elemental questions about materials and human nature. Alejandro Santiago reflects on life, death, being and rebirth through various media such as bronze, ceramics, graphics, watercolor pencils, oil, among others. His most important work is the installation 2501 Migrants, presented in Mexico and California. Alejandro Santiago is one of the contemporary Mexican artists with the greatest international projection thanks to his authentic and free stroke; the mix of textures with a color palette that can vary from sandy ochers to warm midday tones; his graphics where horses, women and everyday life are the themes of his eyes; his sculptures where passions, emotions, feelings are created like three-dimensional mirrors.
