My Dad, Mom, Dad & little brother flee in their Studabaker, leaving all as the Nazis blitz crossed Belgium through the center of Brussels. Many they killed men, women, children& theold. To the Nazi mind thiey are the Master Race, super human. ANd ravaging a village was ok. The Menzels did not stick around for a second to save their lives. Rene's Dad had the presence of mind to begin a journal as they searched with Ten's of thousands of other refugees looking for an escape across the Channel. The first ship arraingements were made was a o chased from their homes & leaving everything. They had an automobile. Very rare. Dad joins the Free French Resistance.so, they are provide w/ petrol so to take René to his army post to fight the Nazi.. He soon joined the US Army. Bootcamp in Alabama. Yikes!! An urban Belgian college kid is dropped into the heart of darkness of Alabama for bootkamp.. Hell, no doubt. He did it for Liberty, Brotherhood & Equality. Vive La France. .Pfc René Menzel.2nd Army Battalion. He was gravely injured behind enemy lines early in the war. He recovers in a German hospital. Shrapnal cut across his back as he leaned down in a JEEP. One hot speeding bit of shrapnel shot out of a blast to to Rene's upper right shoulder w/ extreme velocity vaporizing the flesh creating a 18" canyon across his back. 2" wide & 2/3of an inch deep at the worst. The fates of battle allows him to live but be taken to a German hospital from his upper right shoulder down across cutting him like butter. 3\4" deep x 2" wide at its worse & roughly 2ft. long. When he finally recovers a bit they allow him to take the laundry to the village on his own. My Dad, being friendly&gregarious naturally.as well as Speaking perfect German.he soon is trusted unconditionally. His chores included doing the laundry in the nearest village. He was soon hardly noticed. But Rene had a plan. He created fake traveling paprers stating him an Étudiant/non-combatant. He walked away& ended up in Casablanca, Morocco. A neutral sector at the time. He rented a room for I have the original lease w/ his name on it. Laying low, he met a beautiful woman falling in love for the 1st time. The boy is gone & Le grand homme appears. A warrior now to free France. His parents by now are safe. in the Pyrenees. I have all the original documents.
