In Japanese mythology, the Ryu (wingless dragon) is considered a powerful spirit of water, it is ruled by the clouds, the rain and the sea. It symbolises strength, wisdom and good fortune. In Japanese art the dragon is never totally visible. It is partially hidden in swirling clouds or stormy waves, as "no mortal may look upon its entire body and live."
