Aveva vinto anche i campionati provinciali di pentatlon confermando nei suoi concittadini la
stima e la fiducia che avevano per lui, futuro fortunato conduttore della più importante ditta
della zona; anche il padre, Commendatore Arturo, nutriva grandi speranze nel figlio
Riccardo, sia per il benessere della famiglia, sia per quello della città. Tutto procedeva nel
migliore dei modi quando un mal interpretato episodio andò ad offuscare la capacità di
giudizio della gente
Riccardo vendette per poche migliaia di lire una zuccheriera di argento al noto antiquario e
rigattiere della città; la cosa trapelò sollevando una certa perplessità che divenne
generatrice di ipotesi devastanti quando si seppe che Riccardo, dopo aver passato una
notte fuori casa, all’alba consumò un caffè al bar della stazione promettendo di pagarlo in
giornata.
La città era piccola e quindi affamata di novità, pertanto si scatenò la maldicenza sempre
più carica di invenzioni e critiche. Fantasie o no, le invenzioni arrivarono alla banca che
iniziarono a cavillare sui rapporti con la ditta limitandone i crediti. Il commendatore Arturo,
venuto a sapere quale fosse l’origine del male, dovette allontanare il figlio per limitare i
danni.
La ditta riuscì a far fronte alla situazione ma dovette diminuire la produzione a causa del
ritiro di alcune commesse. La cosa generò problemi occupazionali tali da influire sul
benessere cittadino. E pensare che la zuccheriera la famiglia volle liberarsene perché,
pesantemente barocca, non piaceva a nessuno,
La notte passata fuori casa di Riccardo fu dovuta al rispetto che egli nutriva per i genitori;
avendo fatto tardi e non avendo preso le chiavi di casa, non osò svegliare nemmeno il
portinaio, passando quel che rimaneva della notte nell’attesa che aprisse un bar, ed il caffè
lo pagò più tardi perché capita, a volte, di non avere soldi in tasca.
