Quando accettai l’invito, lo feci col piacere di chi è curioso di conoscere gente nuova, magari
diversa, come in questo caso: ricchi e di buona cultura mai, invece, avrei immaginato di trovarmi
tra gente ricca ma tirchia, di cultura ma priva di “bon ton”, al punto da indurmi ad ipotizzare quale
fosse il comportamento dei nostri antenati nelle caverne del neolitico.
Fu dunque un invito a pranzo, al quale mi presentai con un mazzo di fiori che, afferrato dal capo
famiglia, fu infilato, con precisione e forza, in un vaso semipieno di fiori secchi posato sul
davanzale di una finestra.
Fui introdotto con totale noncuranza in seno alla famiglia evidentemente in attesa del pranzo. In
mezzo a qualche ciao di convenzionale benvenuto, sentii una voce chiedere un po’ scocciata se
anch’io avessi partecipato al banchetto.
Il pranzo fu servito e, come potei constatare in seguito, era composto da una sola portata: un
pesce lesso, neanche tanto grosso. La sua spartizione seguì una procedura fatta di precedenze ed
accaparramenti; quando il piatto arrivò inspiegabilmente a me, dovetti accontentarmi di qualche
minuscolo frammento ed un po’ di sugo. Il fatto che l’ospite fosse ancora a digiuno non preoccupò
minimamene la tavolata; colei che mi aveva invitato, con sguardo compassionevole mi disse
soltanto: “devi essere più veloce”. Era una gara!
