Ho sempre evitato il sole forte dell’estate e mai avrei rinunciato ai benefici dell’ombra se non per
soddisfare le esigenze di una amica. Il fatto assurdo fu che Maria Grazia si intestardisse nel voler
comperare un particolare paio di scarpe proprio lì, in quella città a noi estranea ma che a lei
ispirava quella necessità. All’inizio pensai che il forte sole ed il caldo torrido di quelle strade
l’avessero rincretinita, ma poi, vedendo la sua costanza nella ricerca dedussi trattarsi di una reale
necessità femminile, da me non criticabile, pertanto mi adattai a seguirla nella ricerca, negozio
dopo negozio, passando dal sole rovente al freddo dell’aria condizionata. La cosa si protrasse a
lungo fino a quando, stanchissimo, entrai in una chiesa, col duplice scopo di riposarmi e pregare
qualche santo. Appena entrato vidi la statua di San Sebastiano, abbondantemente infilzato di
frecce, alle cui sofferenze, immeritatamente mi accumunai. Uscito dalla chiesa, leggermente
ristorato, trovai Maria Grazia che mi aspettava soddisfatta del suo acquisto. La notizia mi impose
un ringraziamento a San Sebastiano che raddoppiai alla vista del tram rosso in arrivo, quello che ci
avrebbe riportato al parcheggio dell’auto.
