Pianos et vieux livres ornés forment le décor de son enfance. « Musique ou dessin », décident logiquement les fées autour de son berceau…

Il s’inscrit à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, abandonne son violoncelle et sa flûte traversière. Deux maîtres s’imposent : Albrecht Dürer et Piranèse ; mélancolie des prisons, regard noir de l’ange… Le dessin alors se change en eau-forte. Il grave la nuit en compagnie de Schumann, Brahms, Lester Young ou Albert Ayler…

La perspective le séduit ; il joue à se faire peur avec de longues volées d’escaliers (descendants, ascendants ?)… Aux cauchemars d’enfant répondent de sombres espaces architecturaux ; à la maturité de l’adulte, l’éblouissement de la lumière. La représentation humaine se raréfie ; vient le règne absolu du minéral qu’il continue de tailler avec un acharnement tranquille, exilé volontaire dans les replis d’un XIXe siècle imaginaire. Il fait en passant un pied de nez aux bonnes fées avec ses compositeurs tant admirés : Schönberg, Chostakovitch, Takemitsu. La boucle est-elle bouclée ? Non : la lumière du Quercy est si douce…
