Oana Bakovic
Flowers are an essential trait of our culture and history, an iconic symbol of femininity, strength, and a vital force for our planet’s health.
Oana M. Baković is a contemporary art photographer passionate about wild and endangered flora, singular plants, large bodies of water and movement. She was born in the port city of Constanta, on the shores of the Black Sea, to a Croatian father and a Romanian mother. Always passionate about photography, she began by documenting her family's life while working as an advertising professional.
In 2020, Oana finally focused more on her art and identified that her interest lies primarily in the natural world, refining the technique of using a flash with ambient light and sometimes ND filters.
In 2022, following her Sony World Photography Awards win, Aesthetica Magazine wrote, “Baković offers a refreshing take on floral photography. The results are almost alien, bringing out the natural world from within. Seemingly small plants become towering giants before Baković's lens, rendered in rich, saturated color palettes. »
Oana is committed to the cause of preserving the natural world by showing its exquisite beauty in detail, capturing simple magical moments as they happen, and always seeking out unique places where nature rules.
It is essential to mention that she is not a still life photographer. His subjects are alive, in motion, growing or dying and always in their natural environment.
It is her fear of humanity losing its awareness of the surrounding nature that drives her on this journey to capture and share the sometimes overlooked beauty of the world we are a part of. The artist likes to point out "nature's flaws" in his art, and no changes, embellishments or arrangements should add to what nature has created itself.
The only artificial element is the flash, which the artist uses to add a bit of outline to the fantastical microcosms of nature. She usually works during magical hours. The challenge of pursuing interesting angles and intensities of natural light is the backbone of his approach.

Flowers are an essential trait of our culture and history, an iconic symbol of femininity and strength, and vital for our planet’s health.
My photography of flowers and plants searches beyond their beauty and decorative value. My flowers are not arranged outside of their own world’s rules.
By photographing them in their natural environment, I aim to convey their soul, highlighting the interplay of natural elements that make them unique and vulnerable.
It is my fear of humanity losing its mindfulness of the surrounding nature that drives me on this journey to capture and share the sometimes overlooked beauty of the world we are part of.
I like to emphasise ‘nature’s flaws’ in my art, and no shift, beautification or arrangement must add to what nature created herself.
The single artificial element is the flashlight, which I use to bring to life the fantastic microcosms of nature.
I usually work during magic hours, chasing interesting angles, different natural light intensities, and wind-driven motions.
