As a South African artist, painting part-time since 2004, Nicolaas went to work in London for a year. He took up art classes and started selling his works at a gallery in Cheswick. Through this experience, he returned home and sold his psychology practice to become a full-time artist in 2016.
Nicolaas's artwork is found both nationally and internationally in private collections.
His inspiration is drawn from the many ideologies from Eastern philosophy, his inner thinking, and his experimenting with different media styles. Through a lifelong study of classical music and the use of oil as a favourite medium, he reflects a strong melancholic side within many paintings. As a keen scuba diver with a passion for the sea, he is inspired by the depths and intensity of the vast oceans, resulting in strong, contrasting and bold images.
While he did not start his career as a painter, his education within theology, philosophy, and clinical psychology, together with a keen interest in the sciences such as astronomy, geology and history, have all established the framework of his creations.
Constantly in search of living mindfully. Nicolaas's daily routines and personal rituals strive to keep in touch with everything around him in a passive, non-judgemental awareness, paying full attention to the present moment.
Lyrical, atmospheric, and somewhat ethereal but serene is how he would describe his paintings. Drawn to the texture of paint, he prefers to explore a canvas using large brushes rather than detailed realism.
"The energy rushing beneath the surface of my paintings reveals the pulse of its existence rather than the features of its state". Nicolaas has a strong view that each painting should speak for itself and be enjoyed without too much explanation.
