IKIPEDIA

Richard Jolicoeur (1952-), Ph.D., self-taught and solitary artist who, for 35 years, managed to reconcile the profession of teacher with the concrete expression of a double creative passion inspired by the spirit of the North American counter-culture in both musical and pictorial production. Some of his pictorial preoccupations materialized during the 80s when he participated in the National Capital region in a few group exhibitions as well as in a retrospective of his work during a solo exhibition in 1983 entitled:My heart is big like a pizza. Wielding alternately humor, self-mockery, diversion and the spirit of collage in productions of a naive pop style, some of his works have found takers among private collectors. He also chaired the board of SAHB (sahb.ca) for a few years.

His interest in musical experience is expressed in turn through theatrical rock, noise music and free jazz. These last decades have been mainly devoted to the production of computer-aided music (MAO) several musical works are available online, in particular at BANDCAMP and Youtube. Video production is also part of his interest in setting images to music, from committed poetry to the complete production of short corporate films.

2013 marks the return to practice: "I made a large painting in the manner of Pollock, then I realized that I had already done the same 25 years earlier, so I started painting again to do something new." And as the title of the Rod Stewart's third album, Every Picture Tells a Story (1971), Jolicoeur tries to express in its new production of images with vintage flavors simple ideas that will sometimes make you smile as much by their naivety as by the play of contrasts studied or by obvious references. The artist signs and leaves you alone to judge.
