The Japanese inscription on the left reads ボケッと (boketto), a poetic word that refers to the act of gazing vacantly into the distance without thinking — a contemplative, dreamlike state of mind. Difficult to translate in one word, boketto perfectly captures the mood of this piece: stillness, mindfulness, and being fully present in the moment.
The artwork is created using a textured mixed-media technique that gives the surface a tactile, dimensional quality — making the viewer want to reach out and touch the cat’s fur, the wooden ledge, or the warmth of the tea bowl. In the corner beside the calligraphy is the artist’s personal signature rendered as a traditional red inkan (seal), adding an authentic Japanese touch and a mark of handcrafted individuality.
