Jan Płoński is a contemporary Polish sculptor who has been working professionally since 1974, beginning with period furniture. His expertise in woodcarving was demonstrated in 1985 when he recreated intricate carving applications for picture frames from the Royal Castle in Warsaw, using only an old photograph for reference. Płoński passed his journeyman exam at the Warsaw Chamber of Crafts in 1977 and soon after, in 1978, completed an iconostasis for an Orthodox church in Zabłudów. His religious commissions continued, including a 2.5-meter-high crucifix for a church in Górki Kampinoskie. The following year, he built a rood screen and baptismal font in the style of Renaissance stalls, as well as an altar mensa styled after Baroque altars, for the Bernardine Basilica in Leżajsk. In 1979, he passed the master's exam at the Chamber of Crafts in Kielce.
Between 1979 and 1981, Płoński designed and carved an iconostasis for an Orthodox church in Klejniki near Hajnówka. By 1982, he had settled in Masuria, where he crafted mirror frames sold in Warsaw galleries. His exceptional skill was recognized in 1984 when he was awarded the honorary title of Master of Artistic Craftsmanship by the Minister of Culture. He later worked as a reserve guard for 15 years.
In 1998, Płoński designed and built an iconostasis and a large chandelier for the Greek Catholic church in Giżycko, and in 2003, completed an iconostasis for the church in Kruklanki. After this, he ceased professional craft work, focusing solely on carving for his personal enjoyment. In 2021, his sculptures were exhibited at the Kazimierz Cultural Center alongside the photography of Krzysztof Heyke.
