In english
In the parish of S. Paulo, in Lisbon, you will find one of the most beautiful streets of our capital and not only. Last year 2017, it was considered one of the seven most beautiful streets in the world: Rua da Bica (Bica street), also known as Calçada da Bica, or Rua do Elevador da Bica (the Elevator's Bica street). In close connection with the river Tagus, Bairro da Bica (Bica's Neighborhood) is one of the most picturesque of Lisbon and owns a crossroads of sidewalks, stairways, alleys and bystreets. According to the history of this neighborhood, its inclination is due to a natural catastrophe. In the XVI century, more precisely in the year 1597, a landslide between Alto de Santa Catarina and Alto das Chagas (two places of this area of Lisbon) originated from a valley that gave the present steep aspect to the Bica's Neighborhood.
At the time, "Lisbon was much sought after by outsiders who wanted to work on the river" - which resulted in "a large population increase and caused the Bica, São Paulo and Boavista areas to be inhabited by seamen, fishermen, and all types of hawkers women. "The name of this neighborhood is believed to be due to the existence of " a spout whose water flows noisily to an eighteenth-century tank in the Pátio de Broas or Vila Pinheiro, in Calçada da Bica. "
In addition to this fountain, this area is also composed of the Calçada da Bica Pequena, the Beco dos Aciprestes, the Bica Duarte Melo, Largo de S. Antoninho, Rua do Almada and, of course, the very famous Bica's Elevator It's this transport, mostly with the airy yellow color, which narrows the ties between Bica, Santa Catarina and Bairro Alto. However, "not all "bicas" and sources are summed up in toponymy. Built in 1675, the Bica dos Olhos (the Eyes' waterspout) is known for its effectiveness in treating eyes diseases. In this neighborhood, were frequent the publish the banns of the watermen, in their great majority Galezes, that filled the streets of sounds and of human presence. In Lisbon, fountains of water was frequent. "In addition, waterspouts and fountains were usually places to meet" and 'flirtations' :) . Last year (2017) this street was considered one of the seven most beautiful streets in the world. It's not me who say it, it was the visitors from all over the world who named it as such :)
