The works in this series depict the workers in the coal mining industry during the early 20th century. As the demand for coal increased and industrialization spread throughout the United States, coal mining operations increased in many parts of the United States, particularly in eastern Kentucky. The labor was hard and the job dangerous. Coal mining disasters, such as the Harlan County mining disaster of 1976, were not uncommon and resulted in numerous fatalities. Throughout the 20th century, coal mining remained a major industry in eastern Kentucky, providing much needed jobs and economic stimulus to mining towns.

Hudson Marshall (born 1974, Montreal, Canada) is an emerging contemporary digital artist currently based in Toronto, Canada. He is fascinated with creating works that uncover the lesser observed experiences of the working man.

Marshall's work infuses urban landscapes and interiors with rich colors and uses light and shadow to set an enigmatic tone. The scenes are pervaded by a sense of isolation, silence, and inner conflict. His chosen locations are often lesser observed settings. At boxing gyms, mahjong parlors, auction houses, and corporate boardrooms, the scenes are often inhabited by a single figure or a small group who seem lost in their own space. These people escape from the trials and tribulations of the modern world in places few others access.

You can find his work published regularly on social media and for sale online in a variety of formats.
