Godwin Muscat Azzopardi

My artistic journey spans decades. I live in Malta but travel frequently to France.  Throughout years of a busy professional career I made time for regular intensive painting courses abroad. I have been exhibiting my  work for years and have been featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions. My works , predominantly in oils, are in private collections in various countries.

Over the years I have developed an experimental style where I explore the balance of the border between the real and the abstract. In my semi figurative and semi abstract works  I am inspired by the atmosphere of a place or subject more than by its physical qualities. I am intrigued by the way in which traditional  forms blend with personal concepts and emotions to form new structures. The border between realism and abstraction is a fluid one. The compositions of my works are carefully planned. However as time passes I am giving more space to the exciting direction that a painting takes at a special moment in its creation. Often what starts like a happy accident turns into a journey where I am only loosely guiding the brush. 

In a world of mainly negative narratives I would like to create positive moments and paint the solution, not the problem. I am conscious all the time that the moment a painting is born,  it needs to share its existence with others.It needs to communicate my individual thoughts and values, my quiet optimism. I believe, or wish to believe that  through focus on an artwork that resonates with the viewer, we can make a positive change. Not for the whole world, but for our momentary comfort zone. Yes, it may not last long, but for those moments we are facing the sun. The shadows are behind us.
