Gouache (from Italian guazzo) is a substance using a binder (glycerin) or a gummed water-based solvent (gum arabic). Covering and opaque (unlike watercolor), it mixes easily and dilutes with water (tempera paint). The coloring matters are diluted with water and made pasty and opaque by the addition of gum and honey. The colors become opaque and can, therefore, overlap, so that we paint in both gouache and oil.
