The term "pregnancy in art" refers to any work of art that shows pregnancy. In art, as in life, it's not always clear if a pregnant woman is meant to be shown or not. A common visual sign is when a woman puts an open hand on her stomach as if to protect it. In the past, married women spent most of their lives until menopause pregnant, but this is rarely shown in art and usually only in certain situations. This probably still happens in modern culture. One writer was "amazed at the lack of visual images... of pregnant women in public visual culture," even though several recent works of art show women who are very pregnant. In 1963, Pierre Bourdieu did a study with 693 French people and found that most of them thought that a picture of a pregnant woman could not be pretty by definition.
In Western narrative art, or history painting, there are two common themes where pregnancy is an important part of the story. These are the sad scene generally called Diana and Callisto, which shows when Callisto finds out she is pregnant against her will, and the biblical scene of the Visitation. pictures of pregnant women started to appear over time, and around 1600, "pregnancy portraits" became popular among the wealthy.
Women who were pregnant were both the subjects of art and the people who bought it. Some works, like the Madonna del Parto pictures of Mary, were made especially for them.
