DESIGN
THE DESIGN PROCESS
THE BREIF
This is the introduction to your project. It is normally a short description that should not exceed one paragraph. The brief helps the designer keep in mind what the project is about.
It is like a title on a book. Let’s have an example
BREIF
Design and make a necklace with a pendant to be worn by a young vibrant dude.
INVESTIGATIONS
Investigations can evolve around the various materials, the targeted market, similar products on the market, or techniques, and so many other factors.
Under this the designer might also outline objectives they wound like to attain. Let me continue with the example we had earlier. Under the investigations, we can ask questions like;
a) What the young vibrate dude would wear? We can go ahead to give suggestions of what is in vogue, or even come up with something outside the norms.
b) What age is this dude? We give a range.
c) What is defined as a masculine character and what is feminine.
IDEAS
INITIAL IDEAS
At this point, anything that crosses you mind is put down. This can include words / phrases, cut outs from news papers and magazines, sketches (these could be derived from a set theme or fantasy world). It is advisable to have as many initial ideas as possible; this will broaden your choice later.
BEST IDEAS
From the initial ideas, you can then zero down to what you consider your best. If you find it hard to choose, then you can ask a friend to do that for you. However, you must have a reason to choose any of the ideas.
Remember, you should write down whatever you feel like writing down in this entire section. Write along side your drawings, this might even help inspire you in the future and instead of an idea being thrown away, it will later be developed into a product.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE BEST IDEA
When you are contented with the above sector, you have to chose an idea that you consider the best of the best. Then under this sector, you have to continue working on it. Under her, you can experiment with the principles and elements of art. However, remember that at this stage we are still doing everything in our sketch books.
Under this section, we have to make our final choice. Then we continue to the next section.
WORKING DRAWING
A working drawing consists of all the technical aspects that will be needed to make the product. One has to specify;
• All measurements
• Materials to be used
• Techniques
A working drawing is a technical drawing, that can be read by another party and they are able to make exactly what the designer wants.
PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION
A prototype is the first product of the design that is made. It is not necessarily the final product. At times a designer might have to make adjustments later if they are not satisfied with the out come.
PRODUCT TESTING
The designer will have to find out if the prototype meets the objectives that were set earlier. If not, then they have to find a way forward. Designing is seeing a problem and offering solutions. If at this point you the designer or the design team is contented with all the necessary tests that you have carried out, then you can move on to the next stage.
MAKING THE FINAL PRODUCT
In case you have made some changes, then you will have to make another working drawing. If not, then you can go a head to apply the best technique that will be most productive.
