Antonio Martínez Ruiz nació en 1955 en Albox, Almería. Dejó los estudios a los 19 años y se dedicó a trabajar en la empresa familiar de comercio. Siempre le gustó trabajar la madera, pero nunca en temas artísticos. No fue hasta principios de este siglo cuando despertó su vena artística. Siendo autodidacta, empezó con pequeñas tallas y composiciones con maderas que encontraba en la orilla del mar.
Poco a poco, su afición fue creciendo y en poco tiempo empezó a tallar obras en maderas de haya y sapeli de gran tamaño, principalmente basadas en pinturas de Oswaldo Guayasamín, Pablo Picasso, dibujos de las líneas de Nazca (Perú) y creaciones propias. Durante esos años también realizó muchas obras utilizando maderas recicladas recogidas de la orilla del mar, viejos palets y cualquier material que considerara especial.
En cierta manera, aunque su obra es radicalmente diferente, está inspirado por el gran maestro Pedro Gilabert, con quien comparte el amor por la madera, la imaginación para crear obras con casi cualquier tipo de madera y la circunstancia de haber comenzado en serio después de la jubilación.
También ha creado esculturas de gran formato, aunque desafortunadamente, debido a sus limitaciones físicas, ya no puede llevarlas a cabo. En los últimos años, se ha centrado en una serie que ha llamado "oxidados", en la que investiga con diferentes materiales oxidantes y utiliza formatos muy diversos.
