Yijun Tang a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Award winner. He is an honorary consultant of China Information World as an IT expert. He is a creator of hundreds of contemporary abstract oil paintings. His has practiced Zen meditating for over twenty years but he is also an avant-garde thinker. He studies Western aesthetics and loves traditional Chinese culture at same time. He is the founder of Zen Embroidery – Yijun Tang.
Yijun Tang’s mother is Jinzhen Gu – the Su Embroidery master creator of the national gift between China and USA in 1998- the embroidered portrait for former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his family. Yijun’s elder sister Yehong Tang carries on the embroidered portrait lineage from their mother. Yijun emerges top embroidering skill with Zen, aesthetics, and Western contemporary art. Hence, Zensil is created.
“Zensil (Zen Embroidery) is the art form of Zen practice. It helps people to understand the art the Zen, and to understand themselves. It helps refining egocentrism and ideologism. Zensil is also performance art; it is dynamic Zen meditation that focuses on understanding and achieving real aesthetics,” says Yijun Tang. “Duchamp used methods that were similar to Zen for breaking the fetter of contemporary art. But Zen does not only break, it also establishes. Zensil occurs at the confused era of contemporary art.”
Yijun Tang is not only a theorist for researching and writing about Zen aesthetics; he painted various oil paintings that meet the aesthetic standard of Zen and embroidered on those paintings with the stitching methods he invented. In the two-way exploration of installation art and embroidery art, Yijun invented and embroidered the first three-dimensional Zensil art piece. This signified the first moment of Chinese embroidery art transforming from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. This also denoted the establishment of embroidery in contemporary art range.
