Xu Bing, born in 1955 in Chongqing, is a contemporary Chinese artist renowned for his exploration of language, writing, and culture. Trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, he became famous for iconic works such as Book from the Sky , an installation composed of invented and illegible Chinese characters, and Book from the Ground , a universal visual language based on pictograms. His work questions how communication systems influence our understanding of the world. Xu Bing lived in the United States before returning to China, where he also played a key role as Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He was a MacArthur Fellow in 1999 and continues to be a major figure in international contemporary art.
