Wilhem Von Kalisz is a contemporary Belgian artist known for his innovative approach to painting and his unique perspective on the role of art in society. Emphasizing the use of "the means at hand," he incorporates instruments readily available to him, adapting them through trial and error for his artistic purposes. This creative process often involves modifying these tools and experimenting with multiple techniques simultaneously, even when their origins and forms are diverse.
Von Kalisz believes that a painting ceases to be an artwork if its composition and rules are immediately apparent to the viewer. He asserts that an artwork should remain subtly elusive, with its principles not concealed in secrecy but simply beyond the grasp of conventional perception. Working primarily with oil paints and techniques inspired by the old masters, his pieces reflect a deep exploration of the human experience through shape and color. Much of his work focuses on monumental portraits and the recreation of historical paintings, where he carefully selects colors and compositions to express his vision of humanity beyond mere appearances.
As a self-taught artist, Von Kalisz shares a sentiment with philosopher Michel Foucault, critiquing traditional educational institutions as mechanisms for defining and controlling individuals. Born in Belgium, his artistic journey has taken him through various countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Congo, China, the UK, and currently the Netherlands.
In contrast to many contemporary artists, Von Kalisz rejects the notion of being "revolutionary" or shocking his audience in an attempt to disrupt societal norms. He views such endeavors as lacking substance, reflecting what he terms "new academism." Instead, he strives to honor an enduring, timeless value: beauty.
