Uday Mastenbroek, a contemporary Dutch painter, embarked on his artistic journey in the 1980s as a self-taught artist, painting wall panels for port companies. However, after receiving discouraging advice, he decided to explore the world, traveling to countries such as Greece, India, Thailand, Nepal, and Indonesia.
His travels in the early 1990s led him to delve into clothing design and trade, where his creativity found expression in new forms. Mastenbroek's ventures often coincided with emerging trends, showcasing his knack for being ahead of the curve. In 2007, he founded Everything in Wonderland, where he remained until experiencing burnout in 2020. His struggles with tinnitus gradually led him to withdraw from public life.
After spending several years at home, Mastenbroek's son Sunhyo, also an artist, reignited his passion for painting in September 2023. Since then, he has immersed himself wholeheartedly in his artistic pursuits, continually generating new ideas. Despite the challenges posed by his tinnitus and the chaos it induces, Mastenbroek's tireless determination propels him forward, compelling him to paint.
The 'Field of Noise' series represents Mastenbroek's attempt to channel the chaos in his head onto canvas. These works feature layers of color that remain chaotic until he introduces lines to frame the surfaces, bringing about a sense of peace and balance. Tinnitus serves as both a hindrance and a source of inspiration for Mastenbroek, allowing him to explore the themes of chaos and tranquility in his art.
