Michael Brown, a disarmed black teenager, was shot dead on 9 August 2014 by Darren Wilson, a white policeman in Ferguson, on the outskirts of St. Louis.
The shooting resulted in demonstrations that shook the region for weeks.
On November 24, 2014, the Saint Louis County Attorney announced that a grand jury had decided not to prosecute Mr. Wilson. The announcement triggered another wave of protests.
In March 2015, the Department of Justice asked Ferguson to review its criminal justice system by declaring that the city had committed constitutional violations.
By 2015 Demonstrations commemorating the murder of Michael Brown ended when an 18-year-old boy was shot and seriously injured by police.
