The journey of self-discovery is illustrated through the figures' expressions and interactions. The central figure, with eyes open and a contemplative expression, represents the conscious effort to confront and reconcile with different aspects of the self. The blindfolded figures above signify the struggle to see clearly amidst the influence of external opinions, societal norms, and past traumas.
The palette shifts from dark, shadowy tones to warmer, more vibrant hues, highlighting the emotional spectrum of this journey. The darkness enveloping some figures suggests the weight of external pressures and past experiences, while the emerging warm tones reflect moments of clarity and self-realization.
This painting captures that pivotal moment when we gather the courage to embrace our true identity. It is a tribute to the resilience required to break free from the confines of others' expectations and past wounds, and to integrate all our self-perceptions into a cohesive, authentic self. Through this visual narrative, the artwork encourages viewers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, fostering a deeper understanding of who they truly are.
I am an artist based in London, originally from Ukraine, dedicated to exploring themes of mental health through my artwork. I particularly focus on challenging perceptions of vulnerability through nudity and portraiture. My artistic journey began at the University of Leeds, where I had the privilege of being mentored by Judith Tucker, an esteemed recipient of the Jackson's Painting Prize. Under her guidance, I internalized a fundamental question that continues to shape my creative process: "Have I delved deeply enough to express complete honesty in my artwork?"
Central to my artistic practice is the exploration of light. I am deeply invested in mastering the interplay of light on canvas and carefully curating the presentation of my artwork in exhibitions. For me, light symbolizes hope and serves as a beacon of resilience amidst internal struggles, representing the essence of the human soul.
Two significant milestones in my recent career stand out as sources of pride. In December 2022, I organized a solo exhibition in London to reflect on the Russian aggression against Ukraine and to support refugees in their journey to establish new lives away from their homeland. Additionally, I had the honour of participating in a charity exhibition hosted by "Inky Fingers" in March 2024, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of voting. This event was held in collaboration with Natalie Campbell, an independent mayoral candidate for London.
In March 2024, I participated in the group show "Salt & Stars", curated by Artfuldodgerlondon, which showcased a diverse range of contemporary art that challenges societal norms and celebrates artistic innovation. Following this, in June, I was part of a group show at the Mayfair 54 Gallery titled “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” exploring the fascination we all have for the unexplained, the spectacle of theatre, the pomp of the circus, the misdirection and the thrill of magic, and the telling of mysteries that give a glimpse of the future.
I am most proud of the art performance I organized together with the jazz-electronic band Respair in May 2024 called “Harmony in Diversity.” This performance explored London’s creative heartbeat, fuelling an extraordinary celebration of unity and artistic brilliance. It was a true melting pot of cultures, aiming to explore how we translate this into art and build a sense of belonging. During this event, I had the honour of performing a live-painting alongside Respair, translating their music into a visual ensemble.
As an artist, I believe in the power of art to give voice to important social issues. My work is driven by a desire to provide support, fostering a sense of visibility, understanding, and connection among viewers. Through my art, I aim to empower individuals to feel seen, heard, and connected.
