Born 1948 in Mauritius, Steve Soobben is a self-taught French based artist. Inspired by post impressionists, he started painting aged only 12 and has gone through many phases over 40 years - including cubism and expressionism.
In the beginning, he tried capturing the underlying geometry of the natural world through many landscape paintings. His more recent oil on canvas’ concentrate on triptychs as well as local themes, influenced by Bondi’s vibrancy and incorporating natural light to produce an array of colourful works in comparison to his ‘inspired dark period’ during the 90s.
Fashion designer by trade, Steve originally moved to Paris in his early 20s where he demonstrated his talent by exhibiting locally and joining the association “les peintres du Marais”.
He now exhibits and spends his life between Paris and lovely Bondi Beach.
