Biography
Sterling Ruby, born on January 21, 1972, is an American artist renowned for his diverse work across various media, including ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, video, and textiles. His art is frequently showcased in large and densely layered installations. Ruby draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, such as aberrant psychological themes like schizophrenia and paranoia, urban gang culture, graffiti, hip-hop, craft traditions, punk influences, masculinity, violence, public art, the prison system, globalization, and issues surrounding waste and consumerism.
In contrast to minimalist art traditions, Ruby's pieces often have a scratched, defaced, or splattered appearance, reflecting the chaotic nature of urban environments. Art critic Roberta Smith from the New York Times has recognized him as one of the most compelling artists to emerge in the 21st century. His work explores the psychological dynamics where personal expression confronts societal constraints. Currently, Sterling Ruby resides and works in Los Angeles, with his studio located in Vernon, just south of downtown.
