StarMonkeyz is a duo of photographer artists: Nathalie Prophete and Peter Schubert. They divert the codes of glamor and Pop culture through the figure of the Pin Up. They have set up a traveling studio which has made friendly encounters and benevolence its two main driving forces. Each shooting session was the culmination of passionate discussions where the photo to come, the disguise, the make-up that were to follow were discussed by the photographer and the model in complete complicity.
Pollution, sexism, inequalities, racism, violence... Thinking that the aesthetics of the 50s and of Pierre & Gilles, would weigh down the PinUps with sufficient impact. Each photo was the result of intense research work on the make-up, clothing and lights that could animate the famous Pin Up. The result is there: under the lace and the leather, armed with mascara and their own story, these living women denounce with a smile a world that is no longer going very well.
The StarMonkeyz duo are based in Arles in the south of France. Nathalie Prophete has worked as a make-up hairdresser for theater and advertising. Peter Schubert is from the Netherlands. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Aix en Provence (France). For years, during their travels in the USA and Europe, they met and photographed women whose lives and bodies did not always fit the mold of our society.
