NASA Features Work by Florida Artist Cecil Herring
Florida Artist Cecil Herring loves everything about space and her work Cassini Tracking Saturn I,
a mixed media work on plexiglass, is one of many of her Spacescapes.

Why Cecil Herring Calls all her Art Works Spacescapes®.
CCecil Herring created her signature style called Spacescapes® a spiritual connection to space after she spent years working as a space reporter photographer covering the Apollo Moon Program at Cape Kennedy. Seeing giant space ships lifting off the launch pad 2.8 miles from the press site does something to a person, she says. "I dedicated my art to space ideas in art. Humans are spiritual creatures and divine because we can see the colors of nature and can communicate that beauty in many forms of art."

Florida Today Spacescapes by Cecil Herring
Story about Cecil Herring's Spacescapes® in Orlando Sentinel.
"Finding her Space" Whether in life or art, Cecil Herring always has defied the gravity of convention.
by Jean Patteson, Sentinel Staff Writer.
Thousands of artists are inspired by Florida's flora and fauna, sandy beaches and showy sunsets.
Not Cecil Herring.
"Space is my inspiration, " says Herring, a diminutive firebrand of an artist from Deltona, who first touched brush to canvas almost 50 year ago.
During November, she has been the guest artist in "A Feast for the Senses," a monthly art show, dinner and wine tasting at the Orlando Marriott Downtown, and in January her work will be featured in an exhibition at the Downtown Media Arts Center.
Herring's otherworldly paintings, sculptures and digitally enhanced prints are "Spacescapes," a term, she coined in the early 1970s when she first caught space fever.
At the time, she was a cub reporter in Melbourne, covering the space beat for fledgling Today Newspaper and rubbing shoulders with such notables as rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, physicist Edward Teller, "The Right Stuff" author, Thomas Wolfe and the Apollo-mission astronauts.
"Those were the days," sighs Herring, her sea green eyes growing misty with memories. Mostly, though her eyes sparkle - as does her conversation.
One moment she's reminiscing about campaigning for her late husband, former Seminole Brevard State Attorney Abbott Herring. The next, she's discussing the music of Phillip Glass or the teachings of mythologist Joseph Campbell. Then, it's back to art.
"I can tell my life story in my art" she says as she moves through her house, flipping switches to illuminate the vivid paintings that illuminate every wall, the fantastical sculptures suspended from every ceiling.

The popular first lady came to Eau Gallie, FL to dedicate the school. Mrs. Ford was delighted with Cecil's custom designed and created pendant as she shows here. Mrs. Herring later received a signed thank you letter from the White House. The pendant is now in the Ford collection at the Ford Museum, Grand Rapids, MI

Article
'Find your bliss,' the great Philosopher- Anthropologist Joseph Campbell advised. Campbell was right. I found my 'bliss' in 1956, 49 years ago. I have loved every minute I have spent creating art works and to this day I still love my time spent painting and sculpting. Time stops and I don't age.
