View allI am working on a series of prints based on a Holiday Homes theme. Some come from photos I have taken in Normandy while others evolved from images collected from magazines (In truth, they are not all really holiday homes).
The season is finished. The houses are empty. The shutters are closed. Only the evocative names (Mon Rêve, Mon Plaisir, Les Vacances…) remain.
These empty houses are the inspiration for a series of prints and related iterations using a variety of techniques (etchings on zinc, collagraphs, aquatints...). I want to make the most of printmaking capabilities, and especially the possibility to layer back- and fore-grounds, whilst keeping the image graphic, and strong.

In June, Sophie Cordery will be showing new paintings and etchings in a solo exhibition at the Old Free School in Watford. As well as viewing Sophie’s art, this will be a great opportunity to visit an historic and little known building in the heart of Watford.
Sophie Cordery’s paintings depict everyday objects and interiors in a sensitive and original way, often using old textiles as canvas. Her paintings of empty rooms, lonely chairs and derelict buildings speak of memories tied to a sense of place. She uses use light, distance, colour, scale and unorthodox surfaces to challenge the conventions of painting and explore approaches to representation.
This exhibition is organised by Amanartis, a growing and dynamic presence on the Watford art scene.
Please join us for the opening of this show on Thursday 5th June, 6 to 8

Press release
SOPHIE CORDERY will use her residency at UH (as part of the AA2A programme) to develop an experimental new body of work combining paintings and print. The work will evolve organically from a few core ideas, roughly based on the themes of houses, interiors and domesticity, exploring the idea of a sense of place. By depicting everyday objects such as chairs and empty rooms, she wants to evoke familiarity and poetic possibilities. (posted on 18/11/2012)
