The human skull has been a powerful symbol in art for centuries, captivating artists from the classical era to modern times. Here are some reasons why artists often turn to the human skull in their works:
1. **Symbol of Mortality**: The skull is often portrayed as a symbol of death and mortality. It serves as a haunting reminder of the fleeting nature of life.
2. **Memento Mori**: This Latin phrase translates to "remember you must die". Artists use skulls to explore themes of mortality and the transient nature of existence.
3. **Vanitas Theme**: In art vanitas is a genre that emphasizes the transient nature of earthly life and the futility of vanity. Skulls are common symbols in these works.
4. **Symbol of Rebellion**: In contemporary art and culture, skulls can symbolize rebellion, danger or subversion.
5. **Exploration of Darker Themes**: Artists often use skulls to delve into the darker aspects of human existence.
6. **Versatility**: The skull's ability to evoke powerful emotions and its versatility as a subject matter have made it a timeless symbol in the art world.
7. **Symbol of Change and Transformation**: In some cultures and artistic interpretations, skulls can represent transformation and change.
In essence, the use of skulls in art is a reflection of our shared human experience, encapsulating themes of life, death and the passage of time. It continues to challenge and captivate viewers, serving as a poignant reminder of the transience of life and the universality of death.

Self-portrait — a look through a mirror where time distorts the contours. I, the artist of my life, try to catch myself in this instant palette.
My eyes are two oceans, intertwined with waves of doubt and hope. They reflect the world that I create and that creates me.
My smile is a bridge between my inner world and the outer world. She hides secrets and reveals my emotions. She has sincerity and a mask.
My hands are the tools that mold my destiny. They can create and destroy, hug and push away. They are my footprint on the sand of time.
And the face? The face is a map that marks my moments of joy and sorrow, victory and defeat. It is a mosaic made up of millions of moments.
Self-portrait is not just an image. This is art that changes its author. In every brush, in every line, in every color — a piece of me.
And so, I paint myself on the canvas of life, adding new touches, correcting mistakes, looking for harmony. Self-portrait is an eternal process and I am an artist who will never finish my painting.
