THE ARTISTS' STATEMENT
geocities.c0m/i_societyofartists
Now is the time to talk about the destiny of Art globally. Andre Malraux said concerning our time: " The 21st century will be spiritual, or it will be nothing". In contemporary society, when spiritual vacuum can be filled up by horror, one can understand the prophecy of Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "Beauty will save the World".
People are tired of politics and business, because a Human Being is not a machine or robot feeding his/her own physical existence only. People must have an alternative. What should be giving us a real feeling of life? On what terms do society and communication function? Art is the ONLY alternative because of its unlimited capacity to investigate deeply an understanding of what a Man should be.
Art appears in communication between artists and the world. If Art could be widely related to People, then much of inspiration would be born. A better understanding of the role of Art could help in the contemporary world.
The existing art market is mostly not responsible for the destiny of Art. Art is considered just another commodity or product. The talented artists, who have devoted their lives to art completely, are sometimes unable to earn a living by their professional work. The lives of many true artists are impossible. Besides the taxes equal to the taxes for traders, they must pay the huge percentage to the loca...

INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS (Vol III)

ISA HISTORY.
The Company was established in the third year of the New Millennium at the Florence Biennale of 2003. At that time many supposed the New Millennium as the occurrence of a fundamentally new era of tolerance that would be devoid of wars and meaningless conflicts, as an era of a new thinking.
Many thought a new era as an era of arts and culture. For instance, Kofi Annan told that art is a weapon against ignorance and hatred; art opens new door for learning, understanding, and peace among people and nations. Later, Irina Bokova noted that culture should accompany every development effort.
As a participant of the Florence Biennale in 2003, I have shared such ideas with other artists. I proposed to create the International Society of Artists, which would have to restore a prestige of art all over the world and to promote peace through cultural harmonization of the world.
Then together we have founded the International Society of Artists (ISA) https://sites.google.com/site/societyofartists/isa/home Pasquale Celona, Biennale Director, enjoyed with our initiative
Such ideas arose around the world. The initiative of International Artists for Peace and World Harmony, which was launched by the New York Metropolitan Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolence. There was also created the International Organising Committee aimed to attract many different organizations around the world to our activity.
Rosa Naparstek and I, as the members of the International Organizing Committee, have been invited to hold the Caucus on Art and Culture at the 61st Annual Conference of the United Nations in 2008 https://sites.google.com/site/societyofartists/isa/3-united-nations/p Overall, our impression of a meeting was that the arts and culture have not found yet a stable home in the international public opinion. An indication of such a home would be an absence of the political confrontations and wars. This initiative and its presentation took place thanks to the efforts of both the UN and of the artists, but these ideas have been further developed neither among the artists nor at the UN.
This example shows a situation with art and culture in general. The world has not become a different, the world is not better now than it was in the last tragic century. People's thinking is not changed, mutual misunderstandings increase.
Who knows the antonyms for the words "art" and "culture"? Where is a line between culture and its absence? One thing is clear that there where is no culture and art - there are hatred, conflicts, wars, sorrow and death. There where art and culture present - there are life, inspiration, development, progress, love and happiness.
We developed projects, many of them are carried out in conjunction with ArtLine, a member of the International Organizing Committee https://sites.google.com/site/centreartline But, the ideas of a fundamentally new way of thinking, and about the new role and place of culture and art in the contemporary world are still not understood, not supported and not widely distributed.

LIFE IS NOT A STYLE
Symbol corresponds to the visual arts closer than Allegory, Metaphor, and Myth. A visual image in its nature is Symbol rather than Allegory or Metaphor, which are closer to literature. The visual arts are always implicated with Symbol more or less. Since 1989 my art is called Postsymbolism. It is not just as Symbolism Art. Herein I am trying to express my romantic vision of the real world, both in the abstract and realisticly. My art is not narrative but it can touch us emotionally and mentally directly, as for instance ideas of happiness or sorrow, of light or darkness, etc. My symbolism is like when a person, being exiting with something in his/her soul, has seen the things around with other eyes. Even if the person doesn't know what is a reason of excitement, sometimes a cause is unknown and non-described in words, but the world around is changed a bit then. The paintings reflect symbolically the transformed worlds.
The arts related to Symbol did not create either schools or styles. Moreover, the arts arisen from depth of Symbol have escaped of freezing, or some of them have stopped to be symbolic arts in case of formation them into the certain styles. We may invent unlimited quantity of different names and styles, like Pop-art, Op-art, Flop-art, Slop-art, Stop-art, etc. And then some of my recent works could be qualified as “impression of abstract expressionism” or anyhow, but their symbolic identity remains independently of name.
A form of my painting is closer to Expressionism. But, the arts related to Symbol, and even all the arts probably, are similar to a human, because art cannot be used as a material or as a servant for something else, what could be recognized and generally accepted as an "aim of art". It is also not peculiar to human to be a means. Human is always the purpose. The artist's personal hand and mind are always recognizable in each his/her work and it is not called a style. It is not correct to say: the Rembrandt-style, the Picasso-style, and then it would be wrong to tell about each of humans: “He/she has lived and died in the style of…” LIFE IS NOT A STYLE. An art is life. Life is richer and more interesting than any concept. An art is artist's life.
My paintings are recognizable by expressive manner; they performed with a wide spatula. Besides the obvious and conceived symbols, they contain many other moments, which my subconscious creates by expressive moving of my hand. Allegedly accidentally, allegedly by themselves. The imagination of the viewer, a random stream of consciousness and feelings on the canvas is a lot of implicit symbols that communicate the subconscious of the artist and the viewer.
The world appears sloppy on the canvases. And through this world the symbols of other worlds shine.

Sergej Jakovlev
I left my studies at the technical university in 1980, when I found that my vocation is art. My teacher Vitaly Stasevich, on the speciality of Fine Art at the Pedagogical University (where I studied in 1981-1986), convinced me to follow my vocation independently of any circumstances. My teacher and friend Victor Reikhet, professor of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (where I studied in 1987-1993), is an example for me of such a meaning of life. Now I am a painter living in Sweden, founder and president of the non-profit cultural organization International Society of Artists (ISA) https://sites.google.com/site/societyofartists/
