Colour photograph of a Tibetan Buddhist monk seen through open wooden doors of a monastery. The monk, who is crossing a courtyard carrying a drink and a white scarf, is wearing traditional monk’s clothing, in addition to a matching dark red bonnet as a sign of good fashion taste to ward off the cold temperature, evident by the snow on the ground.

The photograph was taken at Rongbuk Monastery, Rongbuk Valley, Tibet, in spring 2005 during a road journey.

Rongbuk Monastery was founded in 1902 by the Nyingmapa Lama Ngawang Tenzin Norbu in an area of meditation huts and caves that had been in use by communities of nuns since the 18th century. Hermitage meditation caves dot the cliff walls all around the monastery complex and up and down the valley. Mani stone walls, carved with sacred syllables and prayers, line the paths.

Rongbuk Monastery lies near the base of the north side of Mount Everest at 5,009 metres above sea level. For Sherpas living on the south slopes of Everest in the Khumbu region of Nepal, Rongbuk Monastery was an important pilgrimage site, accessed via the Himalayas over the Nangpa La mountain pass. The monastery was also regularly visited by the early expeditions to Mount Everest in the 1920s and 1930s after a five-week journey from Darjeeling in the Indian foothills of the Himalaya. Most past and current expeditions attempting to summit Mount Everest from the north, or Tibetan side, establish their Base Camp near the Rongbuk Glacier about 8 km south of the Monastery.

Scott Gregory Banner is a well-established photographer. He believes that photography is an important medium because it captures subjective moments in time. He believes that black and white and colour photography each have distinct aesthetic qualities. In black and white photography, the tonal range provides depth that can realise ‘more’ in an image. An example of this is the role that shadow plays in an image by 'creating' what appears to be a third dimension. Also, because black and white represents the period before colour, black and white photographs have timeless qualities that provide direct visual links to times past. In colour photography, the colour elements can realise distinct vibrancy and richness in an image. It is these distinct aesthetic qualities in black and white and colour photographs that he loves to capture.

Scott has traveled extensively, often to remote locations. This has been crucial for him gaining a better understanding of the physical landscape, cultures, and people of the world. Photography has played an important role in this investigation.

Scott has exhibited his work and his photographs have featured in journal publications in Australia and America and on Australian National television. He is also a contributor to the collections of the State Library of New South Wales.

Scott Gregory Banner was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, and currently resides there.
