Anglesey artist goes underground
Sarah Southall said it was fun to see her work on the Tube
An Anglesey-based artist is showing her work on London Underground
billboards.
Sarah Southall, 34, from Gaerwen, said it was fun to see her work on
display at Baker Street station.
The scheme, called Art Below, gives selected artists from all over
the world a chance to show their work to thousands of commuters
daily.
A Brighton University fine art trained artist, she plans a solo
exhibition of her work at Theatr Gwynedd in Bangor later this year.
"It was fun to see it 'in situ' with lots of commuters passing by,"
she said.
Mrs Southall, who is married with a 10-year-old son, Joe, said her
work was heavily influenced by her environment.
"My work is firmly rooted in Wales, based on the stunning landscape,
stripped back to its bare lines, embellished with tissue and text
and Welsh poetry, usually medieval."
As well as the Art Below project, she has completed entries for a
Sunday Times watercolour competition and the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
"It is very scary submitting work for these major competitions
because all you get is a slip through the post with an R for
rejection or an A for acceptance.
"It is difficult as an artist working alone to put your head above
the parapet and say 'here I am'.
"Putting work forward for the Underground has been really positive
however and brings my work to the attention of a wider audience.
"My website has definitely had more people visiting."
She said living as a professional artist would have been impossible
without her husband Paul's support.
"It can be difficult around here because you need national exposure
for your work really, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else,"
she added.
