Román Manrique De Lara is a contemporary Spanish artist whose professional life has been deeply rooted in graphic design. His artistic career began as a cartoonist for the humorous magazine El Terror del Savoy, 6, and soon after, he specialized in label design for the food industry. In the 1980s, he contributed to the creativity behind countless video cover designs during the boom of video clubs. Manrique De Lara also ventured into cinema, creating storyboards for the film script Tempus Fugit. He later became the head of the design department at the advertising agency Publifax, where he worked for twelve years. His literary career also flourished, with his first novel, Si se fin el tiempo, published in 1998 by Calíope Publishing House. This was followed by works like The Bear's Paw, Al Compass of Chaos, and The Sharp Sickle of the Moon, all published by Candil Publishing House, and Shadows Nothing More, digitally released on Amazon. In his later years, he returned to graphic humor, creating cartoons for the weekly newspaper Aqui y Ahora during its two-year run. Upon retiring, he gained the freedom to fully express his artistic vision, dedicating himself to painting.
As an artist, Román Manrique De Lara is primarily focused on portraiture, though he also enjoys painting landscapes, objects, and animals that intrigue him for various reasons such as composition, color, or theme. His approach to portraiture goes beyond mere physiognomy; when faced with a blank canvas, he embarks on an introspective journey into the subject's face, searching for the unique gesture, look, or grimace that reveals their soul. Rather than focusing on precise details like the reflection in a pupil, he works with connected stains, allowing them to gradually form the character and convey the essence of the person. Manrique De Lara believes that when he captures a person's soul through his colorful blurs, he has achieved his goal—having a deeper connection with the subject, even if only in spirit.
