ROMAIN BERGER is a queer photographer from the French scene, born in the late 80s in Normandy.
Coming from a cinematographic and theatrical background, he has long been fascinated by the image, popular culture, stereotypes and the question of gender.
He produces quirky, kitsch, colorful and gently provocative artistic works. He claims without complex to be a camp artist, a concept designating, among other things, a form of self-mockery that allows gay men to laugh at the difficulties of their condition in a homophobic society, all with artifice and exaggeration.
This is why, voluntarily, he takes up the clichés of gay culture that he hijacks in order to highlight our world, both in its best and in its worst (loneliness, superficiality, overconsumption, violence, addiction, sex, politics …)
His characters are marginalized, excluded or singled out (gay, women, trans-gender, drag-queen...) who, for the time of a shot, become heroes/fighters. They're trying to get by, they want to be stars.
In addition, it works a lot on weariness and the body. The body is everywhere on social networks and in magazines, it becomes, for many, an addiction to the race for perfection and this allows him, in his photographs, to gently sexualize the body of men.
Sensuality is present in each of his shots, he likes to fantasize the world, put his finger on what is disturbing and above all, he wants to make people dream. A shared voyeurism.
It was important for him to keep the magic in his productions, trivialize homosexuality and affirm his identity, while bringing strong messages, without falling into pathos or melodramatic with dull colors.
Constructing his photographs from A to Z, ROMAIN BERGER is a jack of all trades. He creates the staging, casts the models, makes the decor, the dressing of it and finally, he thinks about the lighting. It takes him between two and three weeks to take a new photograph. He is also a member of the queer collective Balaclava.Q and regularly has articles and interviews in magazines in France and abroad.
