Roberto Tagliazucchi, sculptor, was born in Carrara. In 1980 he moved to Paris where he began his artistic career, taking part in important exhibitions such as the “Salone d’Automne” and “Réalités Nouvelles”. In 1986 he won the contract to decorate the new church of Cergy-St-Christophe and then in 1988 he was in charge of the decoration of the church Villeneuve-Le-Roi. His sculpture, Christ d’Aleray, was selected by the Archbishop of Paris,Cardinal J.M. Lustiger’s commission of religious art to be installed in the first church built in Paris for a century, Notre Dame de L’Arche de l’Alliance.
In 1989 he was commissioned by the French Ministry for Culture to produce “Prometheus”, a marble bas-relief (7 x 3 metres) for the artistic high school, Le Parc, in St-Maur-Des-Fosses. Another of his monumental sculptures stands in the town hall of Evry (1991). In 2002, Tagliazucchi received a special mention for his work “Non Uccidere”, inspired by the events of 11 September, at the international competition “Il nuovo linguaggio delle trasparenze” in Brescia, Italy. In 2003, he won the contest for a sculpture at the hospital Santa Chiara in Trento with his work, “Maternità”. In 2004 the council of Pordenone bought his model, “Arciere”, for the decoration of its new headquarters and then in 2006 he carried out a fresco “les acrobats du cirque du soleil” (6 x 3 metres) for the suburb of Saint-Mandé (Paris).
He has collaborated with the architect Stanislas FISZER as well as with the Roma studio of architecture and Constantin architects in Paris.
His works have been acquired by the St Maur Museum in Paris and he also has sculptures on display at the Bibliothèque National de Paris as well as in numerous other important private collections both in Europe and the United States.

Biography

EXPO ORANGERIE DU CHÂTEAUX DE SUCY EN BRIE
Il y a deux façons différentes, aussi importantes l'une que l'autre, d'approcher les oeuvres d'un artiste.
L'une, historique et biographique, définit celui-ci dans un parcours culturel, social, à travers les caractéristiques de son milieu et dans un sens plus large, cherche à le caractériser par les relations qu'il entretient avec les courants artistiques de son temps.
L'autre s'attache davantage à l'objet d'art, a cet art qui est le sien et qui à travers une série d'inventions formelles remet en question le sens universel de l'art.
Le glissement de l'une à l'autre est inévitable, c'est ainsi que la réduction de l' oeuvre à des caractéristiques psychologiques de l'artiste devient une habitude.
Notre attention se détourne alors de l' oeuvre qui, cependant a son existence propre, dépassant l'histoire et la vie de l'auteur qui pour donner forme à un noyau mystérieux ( rêve, archétype, illusion de puissance) a fait tout ce qui était en son pouvoir et comme instrument nécessaire à son oeuvre a épuisé son narcissisme extrême. S'il y a un point de rencontre entre ces deux visions de l' oeuvre, il faut le rechercher dans le sens universel qu'assume l'objet quand il se transforme en art.
Il renferme alors cette rare "nécessité" communicative, cette mutation de sens qui le rend reconnaissable, appréciable parmi les modèles culturels du moment historique dans lequel vit l'artiste et profitable enfin à tous. Toutefois sens et signification ne sont jamais cristallisés, jamais définis.
Le sculpteur Roberto Tagliazucchi dans ses rares déclarations d’esthétique peut citer le cubisme et le futurisme, la décomposition et la simultanéité, peut élever Brancusi au rang de totem de la sculpture contemporaine, il peut encore admirer le caractère essentiel des thèmes de Moore mais il ne réussira pleinement, heureusement d'ailleurs , à justifier son manque total d'homologation avec des tendances, des modèles, des auteurs, des règles académiques...
Sa "science" spéciale lui permet de rendre l'espace dynamique, d'absorber et de renvoyer la lumière, d'entrer et de sortir librement de l'objet.
L' oeuvre n'a donc pas un côté prééminent mais offre une multitude d'aspects, chacun étant le "bon" dans le moment précis où on l’observe.
L'artiste peut encore conter sa poésie à travers les métaphores, les mythes et les passions qui l'agitent : c'est un homme d'un siècle fragile, en lutte avec la matière, une fin de siècle, agitée, ou, au milieu de véritables ruines , il tente de rendre visible pour lui même ce qui fuit, tente l'entreprise visionnaire du voyage du réel au possible.
Son "humanisme" devient une figure dont les contours retiennent quelques éléments de la multiplicité de ce que par convenance, par conformisme nous appelons l'histoire, la réalité, le milieu. Tâche fort difficile pour celui qui est déjà la métamorphose même.
Le besoin de narration et de "littérature" que nous demandons à l'art nous empêcherons à jamais de pénétrer pleinement dans le paradis perdu ou retrouvé de SOGNANDO (En rêvant), le vitalisme de NATHALIE, la correspondance ancestrale du JOUEUR DE FLÛTE, la détermination obstinée du DAVID. Cependant . forme et idée, les deux âmes indissolubles de l'art ont trouvé leur harmonie.
Dans cette exposition dont "la traversée" nous conduit vers une âme de prédominance méditerranéenne, "l'archétype de la terre" et "l'archétype du ciel" sont les interprètes obligés, l'un avec la sensualité, la corporéité, le démembrement, le broyage, l'autre avec le sidéral, l'absolu, le besoin d'infini.
Entre eux il y a Éros, il y a l'art et le savoir de Roberto Tagliazucchi qui a rendu possible la "beauté" de la contradiction.

Roberto Tagliazucchi: sculpting with love and awareness
If we are able to look at the countless facets of Roberto Tagliazucchi's sculpture, as if hungry to store them in our visual memories, then perhaps we will begin to understand the intellectual keenness they vibrate, the culture of the human, the most daring yet balanced constructive determination which rules this sculptor's highly individual daring with his materials.
Stefano Lanzardo hits the nail on the head in the introduction to his photographic exploration of Tagliazucchi's works, in which he likens his journey into the sculptor's world as a quest along a trail of emotions. True, they are emotions whose nature is undoubtedly earthly, springing from a handcraft whose sculptor involves us
directly and tangibly in the values which he has instilled into his shapes with patience and love. Yet we can also define them dynamic emotions, in that the artist does not surrender to the difficulties of a material which becomes the object of his creativity and subsequently the precious dweller of the space it inhabits.
When the time came for Tagliazucchi to reconcile his art "with the world outside", he chose to use his creative drive to crown the concept of Harmony as defined by Dionysius of Halicarnassus as a mental synthesis. To this definition I would personally add "coordinated constantly with painful yet conscious choices of technique".
The search for harmony in Tagliazucchi's case means reshaping the poetry of proportions "his" way, in other words with the yard-stick of his awareness, his personal perception of "beauty"-that which is closest and hence the most difficult to render eternal.
Tagliazucchi's first rule of harmony can easily be seen in his initial sketch, which although preparatory is already a work unto itself, independently of the three-dimensional work it may precede. The harmony present in the sketch's strongly instinctive tones is even
more obvious as he frees the sculpture from its stone to enter into the dominant sphere of the marriage between gentle curves and careful geometries.
This "labour" of his - how could it be otherwise? - is as single-mindedly desired as it is pursued. It is part of him, exciting with the promise of what will be the tangible outcome. But despite his energy Tagliazucchi is not aggressive with the materials he selects for his messages: if anything I would say it is obvious how much love goes into his sculpting precisely because it is this love which shows us how he has planned the path to his stylistically noble and strongly lyrical conquests. It is here that we must also take what he calls his "aesthetic help" when he talks of "nuoveau romantisme", to understand his newly-found, unswerving desire to capture and exalt rhythmic shapes through a deep irresistible "sentiment of space". When he decides to shut out the world and enter the privacy of his plastic medium, Tagliazucchi knows what he will bring out of it and present before us with fully justified artistic pride: glimpses of the untouched, the historical, the human. And precisely because they are children of his "sentiment of space", they are unfettered by codes, dogmas, habits or restrictive regulations. His Christ de Alleray (1987) is a perfect example: standing in front of it one cannot help feeling in the presence of something completely new. The same subject which has been intensely glorified in countless ways by thousands of sculptors and artists of all centuries is suddenly reborn from a uniquely personal, exquisitely intense humanism coupled - I believe - with a layman's courageous sense of religiousness.
Tagliazucchi does not feel the need to waste time with descriptions; he prefers the narrow path (which he then enlarges into endless plains) of bare essence. By leaving a unique subject such as the Crucifixion free of detailed "circumstances", he enriches it
with its full potential of stark drama, among suffocated cries and imperceptible exaltation. If we then look closely at other works of Tagliazucchi's, such as Dance, we can appreciate his capacity for innovation in the never-ending field of plastic equilibrium with all its pitfalls. No longer is there only the flat horizontal and the absolute verticals, but now we also have the "laterals" - sides whose poetry is in their impetus, a vehement yet elegant impulse born of mature, responsible energy.
Here is a real sculptor, one with the all-too-uncommon gift of responsibility, with the ability to explore within his material, the plastic medium, where lurk unpredictable substantial moments of harmonization, such as those between hollows and luminousness, between planes and rhythms, between measure and spontaneous ness (Take works like Sognando, Nathalie, Canapé, David), all with the authoritative blessing of "Madame Poesie" and "Mademoiselle Imagination".
