The monotype is printed from metal, plastic or a glass plate which the artist painted. The artist may also use paper, twigs, and any other material to transfer an image to the paper. Why do this rather than paint directly on the paper? Because of the special effect one gets with color and luminosity in this process. This is more obvious on the 2nd. Or 3rd. pull of the print. The artist may choose to work into the plate or paper to get a finished piece of art. Oil, ink or paint is usually used in print making but artists also use watercolor for different effects. The word monotype applies because you get only one print from the painting image although one may get 3 pulls each one will be different. Printing may be done by hand or using an etching press. Adding ink to the plate or taking it away to create an image.

Flower Paintings using the Poured Ink Technique
This technique really began over 35 years ago as I began my career as a printer. Each color job requires cleaning the press. Removing the ink, which liquefies, and throwing it on paper, creates beautiful images of color, texture, shape and design. Over time the constant visual expressions reveled through this process allowed me to explore and develop a deeper connection to the flower images lying within my soul. It’s as though these flowers were always there, just waiting for the right medium to bloom.
The flowers created by this technique were not painted using traditional paintbrushes and techniques. I have developed a method for diluting oil-based inks and pouring them onto the paper with one hand, while the other hand holds, lifts and moves the paper, creating a flow of flower petals. By layering color on color, drip on drip the petals take on texture, shape and intensity. Using cotton pads dipped in solvent, I create the translucency of petals and leaves.
The process of creating one of the flower images becomes a spiritual dance. I feel transported – become one with the images. The colors and shapes flow and move through me as well as on the paper. My hope is that whoever sees these flowers will not only see them but will also feel them.
