Cristóbal Ortega Maila, is a painter and sculptor from Quito, who was born on October 24, 1965, into a humble family, descendants of the Kitu Kara culture. He is the fourth of seven siblings, from the married union of María Maila and Segundo Ortega, who baptized him in the Catholic religion, with the name of SEGUNDO CRISTÓBAL ORTEGA MAILA. A boy who years later revolutionized the art of finger painting, becoming one of the most representative Ecuadorian artists of the 21st century.
From a young age Ortega Maila made art visible at home, through his paternal grandfather who did work in goldsmithing, ceramics and drawing, a legacy he took on by his father, who designed house plans, a kind of architect for the time, experiences that gave him to his son. Ortega Maila's childhood developed in the Collacoto neighborhood, on the family's property, which bordered the “María” farm, in this place he felt the inequality of landowners, compared to mestizos. After months he left his house after a family discussion, arriving at the Plaza de la Merced, in Quito, where he worked making portraits. This experience that helped him to understand the way of life of the street people, as well as to discover and practice the art of painting.
Years later he traveled to the United States and Europe, nourishing himself with cultural knowledge, and investigating the social consequences left by armed conflicts and world wars, events that filled him with great sensitivity, thus capturing the collection "Danger of extinction". After investigating its origins, it captures the knowledge of the ancestral cultures of Ecuador through its pictorial and sculptural works, the collections "Faces and Ancestors and the Awakening of the Spirits". In 2000, he made his masterpiece the “Temple of the Sun” Museum available to the public, a place where Ortega Maila worshiped the Inca deities such as the sun and the moon.
His works have been exhibited in important museums in Ecuador, America, and Europe, receiving an important reception not only for his pictorial works, but also for his impulse in favor of Ecuadorian culture.
