Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving tiger subspecies; they are found in the patches of forest on the Sumatra Island. Major threats include habitat loss due to expansion of palm oil plantations and planting of acacia plantations, prey-base depletion, and illegal trade primarily for the domestic market. Despite being given full protection internationally, tiger parts are still found in open trade in Sumatra. Farmers claiming they were endangering their livestock have killed many of the tigers. These tigers were then sold to gold shops, souvenir shops, and pharmacies. Farmers are the main hunters of tigers in Sumatra.
At completion of this artwork there were less than 400 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild.
