Patrick Antonelle is a contemporary American artist born during the resurgence of interest in Impressionism in the 1950s. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to the Impressionist mission of capturing moments of light directly on canvas. Antonelle’s work embodies authentic Impressionism, utilizing subtle tones to create depth and a play of light that not only builds volume but also renders the world around him equally insubstantial.

His signature style features cityscapes of New York, where he masterfully depicts its parks and iconic buildings. Although he once considered a career in architecture, his structures shimmer with an atomic identity akin to the trees and leaves on the ground. Like the French Impressionists, he explores the transformations of natural light, portraying the strongest contrasts among the seasons: lush summers, golden autumns, revealing winters, and vibrant springs. The moods evoked by his handling of light are tranquil, and the disciplined technique he employs contains a radiant palette.

Antonelle's artistic education is deeply rooted in New York, having studied at the School of Visual Arts, the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and the Art Students League. He draws inspiration from the era of French Impressionism, evident in works such as Nocturnal New York, which features the Flatiron Building in 1906, and Winter on Fifth Avenue, showcasing horse-drawn buggies alongside vintage cars. While many of his images capture timeless scenes, they focus more on the changes in the natural world than on human impositions. The small figures that populate his landscapes could belong to any time, though he occasionally includes himself within his creations, reflecting his intimate connection to his surroundings.
