Biography [edit]
'Flemish by origin, Irish at heart and true 'Collinard', Pato Van Hecke is a multifaceted artist. Having lived in Moustier for three and a half years, he devotes himself to painting, photography and music.
It was in 1992 that he left his Flemish country to live just on the other side of the linguistic border. In the 1980s, he lived in Ireland for four years. It was on the green island that this completely self-taught man began to take his first photos and devote himself to drawing and painting. This stay in Gaelic land will have a profound impact on him and will influence his entire artistic production.
Returning to Belgium, he will not forget the Land of Clover and will continue to explore the Celtic world: Wales, Scotland, Brittany, etc.
In the meantime, Pato Van Hecke also took up music. In Ireland, he sang in bars with local musicians. With Flobecquois Django Mespouille, Pascal Wacquez and Xavier Parmentier, he launched Land (folk and world music) but also opened "Le Rustique" in Ellezelles, a tavern where concerts are regularly organized.
In 2000, the group "Luna Moon" see the day. Over time, its composition has changed: alongside Pato (vocals and percussion), we now find regional musicians, the Lessinois Pierre Driesmans (guitar, banjo, etc.), the Tournaisiens Lucky Depret (accordion) and Patrick Hanapier (violin) as well as two singers: Nancy Apers and, more recently, Nina Van der Haegen. Female voices constitute an enriching contribution to this group which offers its own compositions while taking up or revisiting traditional Belgian, French, Scottish, Irish... but also North American repertoires. Luna Moon has just released a second CD entitled "The Call" recorded at the Horlebaix studio in Bois-de-Lessines.
Alongside Luna Moon, Pato Van Hecke plays with other groups: Doonen (Irish folk) or La cour de Sonck (Flemish and French traditional). He also participated in the recording of the double CD "Folk in Flanders" published by the Dranouter festival.
As for the title of the work "People and Places", it sums up the approach of the Van Hecke photographer well: "I mainly make portraits, of simple people that I have met, with whom I have spoken, as well as places I have visited and lived..." It was in 1983 that Pato began practicing photography. Since then, he has always used film equipment. The resident of Moustier, who considers himself an amateur, always photographs in natural light, even interiors."

Article
