Nicolas-Monk GD was born in Orléans in 1989, after an academic training in Sociology then in Cinema, his professional career was oriented towards the professions of video and filming at first.
As a teenager he began his photographic practice by experimenting with the family compact digital camera. Encouraged by the artist Cidàlia Alves, he will continue to deepen this medium, exploring various techniques and subjects in works that offer a range of visual experiences.
By addressing themes such as nature, seascapes, abstract shapes and floral motifs, Nicolas-Monk GD creates a dialogue between reality and imagination. He explores different artistic movements, drawing on various influences, from impressionism to abstract art, including constructivism and surrealism. This diversity of styles allows him to express his creativity in multiple ways and to build evocative works that invite viewers to immerse themselves in visual worlds imbued with romanticism, dreamlike and mystical surrealism.
His work highlights textures, colors but also meticulous details. Some pieces are more marked by fluid lines, a highlighting of colors and a representation of forms suggested rather than explicitly defined, an invitation to contemplative plenitude. With more abstract compositions he works on the fragmentation of forms, the juxtaposition of patterns, and iterative creation. Macro photography allows him to highlight details that captivate the viewer towards the meticulousness of these microcosms and their textures, like a call to other universes.
In 2021, his passion for music and vinyls guides him to create collections of photographs in square format exclusively. He is particularly inspired by the aesthetics of album covers to create visually captivating compositions. Another facet of the musical influence on his work can be found in the choice of titles for his works, which can evoke atmospheres, emotions, similar to those of ambient, environmental, trip-hop music. These designations invite viewers to dive into visual worlds that awaken soundscapes and sensory experiences.
Nicolas-Monk GD's photos free themselves from a subjectivized realism to give time and space to an exchange between the sensory and the emotional, in visual spectrums that can oscillate between intensity and serenity.
