Nelson Neves est né à Santo Antão, Cap-Vert, en 1973. A l’âge de sept ans, il
émigre avec ses parents au Luxembourg. Après ses études primaires et postprimaires,
il apprend la profession de décorateur avant de se lancer dans
la peinture. Sa première exposition de toiles a eu lieu en septembre 2001 à
Rodange (L) dans le cadre de la semaine culturelle capverdienne. Depuis, se
sont succédées une quarantaine d’expositions collectives et individuelles au
Luxembourg, en France et au Cap-Vert.
L’art de Nelson Neves se situe entre le figuratif et l’abstrait. Ses couleurs
sont très vives et bien contrastées. Les tableaux de l’artiste ne donnent pas
seulement des impressions du moment, ils invitent le contemplateur à des
longs voyages sur d’autres continents.
Ses oeuvres rappellent beaucoup les vêtements colorés des femmes en
Afrique. Le continent africain en général et le Cap-Vert en particulier inspirent
l’artiste, sans oublier l’influence que le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg – pays
où Nelson Neves vit depuis longtemps – a sur sa création artistique.
L’artiste propose également des ateliers de peinture « African Art » à des
enfants et à des adolescents, mais aussi à des personnes souffrant d’un
handicap physique ou psychique. Ses workshops, proposés au Luxembourg
et au Cap-Vert, connaissent chaque fois un grand succès.
La création artistique de Nelson a évolué les dix dernières années par rapport
à sa technique, au jeu des couleurs et des formes et au choix des thèmes.
Selon Henri Fischbach, correspondant de presse, “plus que jamais à travers
son art, l’artiste arrive à faire passer des messages universels”.
