The "Retro Fantastic" series, was part of a group show at the Dutch Design Hotel, Artemis in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2019.
Marian Williams worked on the theme of the fantastic 50s and 60s.
Those were the days; the future was promising.
"From nowadays, reality I look back to the rise of capitalism and consumerism with a nostalgic and critical eye. "
In the series, images of the good old days are set against a different reality.
Tales of hope and glory when men conquered space, science was the future, bombs were power games and plastic was fantastic.

All images are original cut outs from 1950's and 1960's vintage magazines.
The body language, reenforced by the abstract backgrounds, replace the facial expressions in these compositions.

Signed, varnished and delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
Delivered with a unvarnished natural wood box frame.

The works are enlargements of brut collages on paper.
In this collage all images are from authentic vintage magazines.
The series is produced with techniques that make each composition unique and original.
The original collage is mirrored, enlarged and printed, then transferred onto canvas and finished with oil paint and pastels.
Torn paper is added to the composition, this paper is from French 'Illustration' Magazines dating 1914-1917.
The aged and worn paper adds to the nostalgic aspect of the portraits.

Collage Brut is a series of non polished paper on paper collages. It refers to 'Art Brut', "raw art" or "rough art".
In this series, vintage paper is roughly cut or torn, elements are loosely glued to worn sheet of paper.
This paper is from an old edition of 'Scenes from Shakespeare for the Youth', measuring 44,5 x 31,5 cm (17,5 inch x 12,5 inch).
Compositions in this series are built up with only one, two or maximum three elements.
The elements compliment or contrast each other, making the composition surreal.
The Collage Brut compositions come from the soul and aim to open questions and emotions for the viewer.
The artworks are varnished and signed on the back, delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
