Michel Haas (1934-2019), born in Paris in 1934, delved into the realms of philosophy and Renaissance painting during his academic pursuits, both of which profoundly influenced his artistic endeavors. Haas's creative vision was further shaped by his solitary travels to remote corners of the world, akin to that of an intrepid adventurer. His quest for the primal and the timeless drew him towards the realms of primitive arts and Paleolithic figures.
A pivotal moment in Haas's journey occurred during his student days when he experienced a profound connection with the earth's subterranean depths. This encounter spurred his decision to become a painter, driven by a desire to unearth the essence of pictorial material rather than merely seeking representation.
As his artistic exploration progressed, Haas's relationship with materials evolved. Working exclusively on paper, he manipulated, crumpled, tore, and inked the material to create works imbued with sculptural allure. The process of material manipulation held such significance for Haas that he emphasized "technique in paper" over "technique on paper," highlighting the primacy of material excavation over representational concerns.
Captivated by the spectacle of everyday life, Haas depicted anonymous individuals encountered on the streets, each titled by a defining gesture or action. He sought to capture fleeting moments that encapsulated the essence of existence, leaving an indelible imprint on each viewer.
Serial repetition also played a central role in Haas's oeuvre, reflecting his inability to encapsulate the vitality of his subjects in a single image. Certain motifs, such as embracing couples, recurred throughout his body of work, evolving over the years.
Represented by the Jan Krugier Gallery, Haas achieved significant recognition, with a notable exhibition at the Maillol Museum in 1998. He passed away in Marseille in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of artistic exploration and innovation.
